Throughout any given day we use up our energy and maybe even our reserves. Our emotional, physical, and even mental strength is often put to the test - sometimes all at the same time. I'm finding with the current political "vibes" going around - and I try to stay out of politics as best I can -that my bandwidth is getting shorter and shorter, more anxious, more stressed, and more unsure of what I'm going to see next or hear next. But I'm not going to talk politics! I'm going to talk about mindful meditation - "micro-meditations that are useful for high pressure, high-stress moments that allow our minds and bodies the necessary pause for the nervous system to de-stress and re-focus". This type of meditation has been created by Sarah Kim, a sport and exercise physician, based in Toronto, Ontario.
Mindful meditation can be done sitting or lying down, listening to a guided meditation, or if all you have is two minutes to recharge and reconnect, you can learn to do it in the moment anywhere.
-
Be aware of your thoughts and your breathing. Close your eyes and take a deep breath, hold it for a moment, and slowly exhale through your mouth.
-
Feel your feet planted on the ground, your hands on your legs, or by your side. If you have more time, you can do a body scan - let your mind notice any sensations as you move through each part of your body.
-
Take another deep breath and feel your stomach expand, hold it for a moment, and slowly exhale while you feel your shoulders lower and relax.
-
Repeat as many times as you are able or need to.
If you have more time, try this two-minute meditation with a warm drink, or listen to it during a coffee break with your team.
Or this 5-minute mindfulness meditation.
I hope this was helpful! What do you do that helps?
