Tips to Prevent Injury While Shoveling Snow

With the winter season coming upon us, many of us will have to add shoveling to the list of chores. Shoveling, when done wrong, can end up leaving us with annoying injuries.

Here are some tips from the OCA to consider to help you prevent any injuries:

  1. Drink lots of water.
  2. Layer up and wear proper shoes with good tread to avoid slipping.
  3. Pick a light shovel, preferably small with a curved handle that is push-style. This will help ensure that you are lifting less weight and thus, putting less strain on your body.
  4. Warm-up!
  5. Push the snow and try to avoid throwing it. If you have to throw the snow, try to do it straight in front of you, and don't twist your back.
  6. Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
  7. Watch out for the ice to avoid unwarranted slips and falls
With these tips, braving those winter storms will be a lot easier. If you have any questions about winter injury avoidance or care, please contact the clinic to speak to one of our Chiropractors!
